What started as a sea of orange excitement as Oklahoma State prepared to take on South Alabama turned into a flood of orange heading for the exits around the third quarter.

OSU fell to USA 33-7 on Saturday night giving Southern Alabama its second victory against a Power Five opponent in program history.

Jaguar running back La’Damian Webb had two touchdowns and ran for a total of 151 yards. Receiver Caullin Lacy pitched in five catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

We've got to stop the run,” said OSU head coach Mike Gundy. “We came in worried too much about them throwing the ball, which is really what they had done.

“They got us running the ball. We have to stop the run first. Then rally back and deal with the pass. We got outcoached and outexecuted."

The Jaguars (2-1) had a total of 243 rushing yards along with 152 yards through the air. The Cowboys (2-1) on the other hand were only able to produce 94 rushing yards and 114 passing yards.

OSU used the three quarterback system rotating in Alan Bowman, Gunnar Gundy and Garret Rangel.

Gundy had the best outing out of the three completing 9-of-18 pass attempts for a total of 64 yards. He was the quarterback when OSU scored its only points of the night in the form of a Jaden Nixon 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma State struggled to get the run game going early and it stayed that way all night.

"It hasn't been working out as much as we'd like lately, but I mean, we just can't give up on it completely,” Nixon said.

The Cowboys had almost ten minutes less of possession time than the Jaguars. OSU’s possession time totaled 25:20 compared to USA’s 34:35.

Cowboy quarterbacks were sacked four times on the night resulting in a loss of 32 yards.

“We've got to do a better job of protecting the quarterbacks and giving those guys a chance to function,” Gundy said. “From being on the sideline, it looked really difficult for them.”

Oklahoma State seemed to be gaining some momentum after the Nixon Touchdown but that momentum came to a halt after South Alabama recovered a muffed punt deep in Cowboy territory.

The Cowboys will have a chance to bounce back as they take on Iowa State in Ames this Saturday. The game is set for Saturday, Sept. 23 with kickoff at 3 p.m. CT.
